A Vermont man has been charged in the death of actor Treat Williams, who died in June as a result of a motorcycle accident at age 71.
Following an investigation by the office of Bennington County State’s Attorney Erica Marthage, 35-year-old Ryan Koss was issued a citation on a charge of "grossly negligent operation with death," a press release issued by the Vermont State Police on Tuesday revealed.
Koss was driving an SUV in Dorset, Vermont, on June 12, just before 5 p.m. EST, when he crashed into Williams' motorcycle.
Williams was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York, where he was pronounced dead. "The Medical Examiner’s Office in New York determined that Mr. Williams died of severe trauma and blood loss as a result of the crash," according to the release.
Vermont State Police contacted Koss Tuesday night and he voluntarily brought himself in where he was processed on the charge and released.
He is scheduled for an arraignment on Sept. 25 at the Vermont Superior Court in Bennington.
Williams' family said in a statement obtained by USA TODAY on June 12 that they are "shocked and greatly bereaved."
"Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him," the family continued. "We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and please continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers."
Williams acted in several films, including "The Eagle Has Landed," "Prince of the City," "Once Upon a Time in America," "The Late Shift," "127 Hours" and "Run Hide Fight."
